Ladakh: Let It Flow

This was one of those road trips which needed no frill, no paraphernalia. But sound is an important part of my life. Much as smell is. I have almost no tolerance for the type that I don't like.

I concluded that the drivers in Ladakh cannot drive without their music. And understandably so. So we were exposed to three types of music - latest dhinchak, 1990s' Nadeem-Shravan variety, and some traditional Ladakhi music. As you can imagine, while Pandey Ji's seeti is very entertaining, it can get on to your nerves. So I tried to maintain a balance between the drivers' music and my own. Places like More Plains could not have been experienced with anything ordinary!

Now, a lot of my music is either dark or glum or such that I have already weaved a story around it. So I had to be selective about what I take for this trip. There was no room for emotional baggage. The peppy, Bappi Lahiri type of numbers that I especially took along did not really go with the mood. So I was down to a few songs. And there were a few highlights.

This is a multi-purpose track. Keep changing the setting and play it on loop. It works like magic.

Moved me to tears.

If this song doesn't make you feel like you are in love, what does?

Their magic is unmatched. Period.

All time favourite! On the trip, its first occurrence was towards the end of a very long day. We were all sleepy and cranky. And then the hero got us excited. Highly!

Remember I learned a little dance routine for Varun's cocktail? This was one of the songs we danced to then. And this is the song I danced to in the car. Love it!

After a long hour of silence, this song took the mood to another level altogether!

I sang without inhibition after long. And laughed too. Some sounds mean a lot more.

Beyond Bedtime Happiness!

Youtube is not cooperating tonight, or I would have posted some of my happy favourite songs tonight. The world of Hemant Kumar, Mohd. Rafi, Geeta Dutt and Lata Mangeshkar. And oddly enough even Amit Trivedi somewhere in between their awesomeness.

Evergreen

It has been playing in a loop for several weeks now and I cannot get enough of it.

Dated

Dates that have memories associated with them, irrespective of whether they were good or not, make me very uncomfortable these days.
Maybe it's the age, or maybe it's just my circle, but everyone around seems to be struggling with a change within.   How reactions to things have changed, how feelings for people have changed, and how change has forced more change.
I used to be the obsessive woman who remembered all dates related to all things insignificant. At some level I still do, which is why the struggle, I guess. But detachment exercises have been on for a while now. And I know the truth too.

I think I am jealous of people who are managing to go through similar phases without being cynical. And there must be few things that make me feel as pathetic about myself as this thought does.

On an unrelated note, I think I am going to make a short trip on one of the coming weekends. Not a exploring-new-places trip, but a I-have-money-to-blow trip to another metro just to meet friends. I told Dad to help me figure investment plans!

You know of times when feelings are so incredibly strong that you are out of words. Even to write. 8th February brought some such feelings. I finally went for a concert of Ustad Zakir Hussain's. And it wasn't just him, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was there too. It was thrilling and completely magical. It was also very cold and I wasn't appropriately dressed, but the sounds in that park that evening were unreal and nothing else mattered.. The moon gave the setting perfect company too. And as you may have guessed, it was one of the happiest moments ever. :D

Memory of a Memory of a Memory

Memory!

I was just listening to fm and heard that song rang rang mere rang rang mein from the movie Bollywood Hollywood.
It reminded me of this one thing that happened in school. I got to dance with an ultra hot guy on this song. He was from St. Thomas, Dehradun. That school had come to mine for a sports meet. The dance was at the social we had with their team.

Boy! Were all the girls of my batch jealous? Or was it envious? And did i forget to mention that he asked me for the dance. :P

The best part was that it ended at 9 in the night and next day it was news!! And was I enjoying the attention or what?!!

I swear, that guy was very very handsome and smelled great too. I remember, before leaving he came up to get a picture clicked with me. Aaah...there were more eyes staring at us. Lol!!

He turned out to be bastard but then who cares!! I had a great time. Plus, a break from the fact that I was not one of the 'sought after' girls in school ( in this context) was welcome. :D :D

O Bijuria!!

God bless the creators of good music on this earth. Seriously.

__

I have found my talent. My art. It is fucking up exams for subjects that I love to the core. And making sure that I never ever score well in those. In school it was biology. I cried every time I got my papers back. In college it was the only subject that I loved - macro economics. I remember crying and howling after the exam because I knew every thing that was there to that subject, and still I managed to fuck it up. And today it was marketing. I knew stuff. It was one paper I was well prepared for. And one should see what I wrote during the exam. If I were to correct that paper, I'd make sure I won't pass.
Icing on the cake? Like for a few other things, this place didn't even let me mourn for it. The next exam was scheduled 30 minutes after that one. And this is where "life is unfair" is applicable for me.

Khoya Khoya Chand

There is a new song that I have fallen completely in love with. It's catchy, and thankfully is sensible unlike all 'catchy' numbers that they produce nowadays. And I don't know if it's just coincidence that this one also features Shiny Ahuja, but he's also one charming thing, and I'm just glad-er that he's part of it! :D

So the lyrics go something like this...

Kyun khoye khoye chand ki phir aakh mein, talash mein, udaas hai dil...
Kyun apne aap se khafa khafa zara zara sa naraz hai dil...

Ye manzilein bhi khud hi tai kare...
Ye faasle bhi khud hi tai kare...
Kyun, to raaston pe phir seham seham sambhal sambhal ke chalta hai ye dil...

Zindgai sawalo ke jawaab dhoondne chali..
Jawaab mein sawalon ki ek lambi si ladi mili..
Sawaal hi sawaal hai sujhti nahi gali..
Ki aaj haath thaam lo, ek haath ki kami khali...

Jee mein aata hai...
Murda sitare noch loo...
Idhar bhi noch loo..
Udhar bhi noch loo...
Ek do ka zikar kya...
Main saare noch loo...

Kyun tu aaj itna vaishi hai mizaz mein mazazz hai aye gum-e-dil...

Dil ko samajhna to kya aasaan hai...
Dil to fitrat se sun lo na baimaan hai...
Yeh khush nahi hai jo mila...
Bas mangta hi hai chala...

....

Kyun khoye khoye chand ki phir aakh mein, talash mein, udaas hai dil...
Kyun apne aap se khafa khafa zara zara sa naraaz hai dil...

Absolutely love it!!!

Amit Paul

Today's the third Friday night in a row that I have cried out in absolute praise for someone. I have pretty much followed Indian Idol since the first season, and have seen some good singers in it too, but this one guy in the 3rd season is just AWESOME! I was completely shattered when he got voted out during one of the preliminary rounds, and nobody I know was as ecstatic as me when he came back as a 'wild card entry'. The guy's voice is soo soothing that it's almost magic when he sings. I don't think I have ever voted for anything on a reality show on TV before, and for him I have sent two SMSs every Friday night. I absolutely LOVE his singing and I really hope he does not get voted out. Really really hope to see much more of him!!!

Puppets and Paupers

Economics is back on the table! Not that it could or would have gone anywhere far yet...but yes, I am officially back to the grind. I wish somebody gave me an official datesheet too so that I could start planning stuff. It has been delayed enough!

So, with the subject coming back, day-dreaming is back too. And it’s quite annoying. I neither like it (‘coz then I get behind my ‘schedule’) nor does it lead to anything concrete...just (not so plain) dreams.
Hmm....dreamed a few nice dreams today.

Anyway!
I still don’t like sitting at home. Each day is a boring drag. My idle mind plays dirty games with my heart. And there is no one to talk to! What a pain!
Not forgetting (or not allowed to forget) that I instantly start putting on weight if I sit home.

So today was a day dedicated to rain, sleep and Menwhopause. Yeah, I got the bug from you know who (Ahem! I meant where). :P
Of course, there was a dash of trans-national corporations and poverty, etc. too. But just a dash of it.

Was just rambling for no reason...
Good night!

Please don't try too hard to link the title to my post. It's only because I've fallen in love with this song. 5 minutes and 10 seconds of pure bliss!

I Hope You Dance

I'd been doing a lot of forced self-analysis in the recent past - thinking about strengths, weaknesses, blah, blah and blah. And one weakness that was obviously irrelevant then but quite a weakness still is that I'm a passive listener when it comes to music. To me, sound matters more than the lyrics. It's not a new discovery but then this is just how I function. I hardly make an effort to listen to(understand the meaning of) the words. I usually need someone to tell me to do it. I wish I wasn't like this.
So, it again led to a situation where I had a beautiful song in my tiny collection and I'd heard it a zillion times...liked it too...but only now saw how beautiful it is because it's Saumya's favourite song and I got to read the lyrics. It's thanks to Rohit that I get to hear I hope you dance by Lee Ann Womack...

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you still feel small
When you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you dance!
